The reflective coating (silver) that is applied to the back of the glass surface to prevent corrosion was invented by the German chemist Justus von Liebig in 1835. The silvering process was adapted for mass manufacturing and led to the greater availability of affordable mirrors. Glass mirrors are often coated with non-toxic silver or aluminium. There are many types of glass mirrors, each of them represent a different manufacturing process and reflective type.
